Iāve had a particularly interesting few weeks at work. Although I work in a hospice itās not death everyday, but four patients I was especially fond of died within days of each other.
As I drove home, I found myself thinkingānot about anything in particular, just about life in general and how fleeting our time on this earth really is. The evening sky held the warmth of a summer evening, the trees caused a dappled light as I drove under their canopy, the wheat in the fields was beginning to ripen, and the world around me looked quietly beautiful.
I started giving thanks for all the abundance in my life: the people I love, the work I do, and the privilege of being present for others at some of the most important moments of their lives.
Then, there in the sky, was a rainbow.
There had been no rain that I was aware of. The sky was a clear summer blue with fluffy white clouds. It was just a small rainbow, nothing dramatic, not even a whole arc visible, but enough to make me grin.
It reminded me of God’s covenant with us:
āI have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.āGenesis 9:13
In that moment, it felt like a gentle reminder that I am loved.
Of course, if I were feeling cynical, I could explain it away. Perhaps there had been rain somewhere I hadn’t noticed, or maybe it was falling a few miles further up the road. Perhaps it was simply the right combination of light and moisture creating a beautiful refraction.
But then, the same could be said of so many things.
My feeling is this: if you’re looking for the glimmers in life, the more you look, the more you find. I chose to hear a message of love.
And sometimes, if you’re very lucky, those glimmers find you first.
Or perhaps they’ve been there all along, waiting for you to notice.
